The challenge inside a root canal
Root canals are not simple straight tubes. They curve, divide, narrow, and connect through tiny side branches and fins. When the nerve inside a tooth becomes infected, bacteria can settle in all of these spaces. Endodontic files shape the main canal, but research has long shown that they leave some areas of the canal wall untouched.
That is why irrigation, flushing the canals with disinfecting solution, is as important as filing. The question is how to get that solution into every corner.
What does ultrasonic irrigation add?
With UC ONE, a fine tip is placed in the canal after it has been filled with irrigating solution. The tip vibrates at ultrasonic frequency, setting the liquid in motion. This activation creates streaming currents and agitation that help the solution move into areas a passive syringe flush may not reach, and helps lift debris and biofilm from the canal walls.
The process is quiet and does not add discomfort. It takes place under the same local anesthetic as the rest of the treatment.
When is it used at E&D Dental?
Primary root canal treatment
In first-time root canal treatment, ultrasonic activation forms part of the cleaning protocol, alongside careful shaping of the canals. See our dedicated page on ultrasonic root canal cleaning for the procedure from the patient's side.
Retreatment
When a previously treated tooth becomes infected again, old filling material and bacteria must be removed. Ultrasonic energy can help loosen debris and disinfect canals that were missed or incompletely cleaned the first time. Read more about root canal retreatment.
Complex anatomy
Molars with curved or extra canals, sometimes first identified on low-dose 3D CBCT, are cases where thorough irrigation is particularly valuable.
Why it matters for saving teeth
Seoul E&D Dental Clinic places a high value on keeping natural teeth where reasonably possible. Effective disinfection is central to a root canal that lasts. Reducing the bacteria left behind aims to lower the chance of reinfection and the need for future retreatment or extraction.
Limitations
Ultrasonic irrigation improves cleaning but cannot overcome every problem. Teeth with deep vertical root fractures, very advanced bone loss, or insufficient remaining structure may not be saveable. A well-fitting crown or restoration afterwards is also essential to seal the tooth. We explain the expected outlook for your tooth before you decide.
What patients experience
- Local anesthesia using the clinic's 3-step system.
- Isolation of the tooth to keep it clean and dry.
- Shaping, then ultrasonic-activated irrigation.
- A temporary or final seal, depending on the stage.
