Digital Guided Implants

Digital guided implants are dental implants placed using a 3D-printed surgical guide designed from a low-dose CBCT scan. At Seoul E&D Dental Clinic in Sanbon, Gunpo, the implant position, angle and depth are planned on a computer first, so surgery follows a pre-checked plan with high precision and less guesswork.
  • 5 min walk from Sanbon Station (Line 4)
  • Late hours Mon & Thu until 20:30
  • 3-step painless anesthesia system

What is a digital guided implant?

A digital guided implant is a conventional titanium implant that is placed with the help of a custom surgical guide. Instead of deciding the exact position during surgery, our dental team plans it in advance on a three-dimensional model of your jaw. The guide is a thin template that fits over your teeth or gums and has a sleeve showing exactly where the drill should go.

The plan combines two kinds of data: a low-dose 3D CBCT scan showing bone height, width and density, and a digital record of your teeth and bite. Overlaying them lets us see nerves, the sinus floor and neighbouring roots before anything begins.

Why guided placement matters

  • Accuracy: the implant is positioned where the future crown needs it, not only where bone happens to be convenient.
  • Safety margins: distances to the nerve canal and sinus are measured in advance.
  • Shorter surgery: because decisions are already made, chair time is often reduced.
  • Less invasive options: a guide often makes no-incision flapless placement possible.

Who is a good candidate?

Most adults missing one or more teeth can be considered for guided surgery. It is especially helpful when a tooth sits close to the sinus or a nerve, when bone volume is limited, when several implants must be aligned for a bridge, or when you want a smaller surgical wound.

Guided surgery is not a substitute for adequate bone. If the scan shows the ridge is too thin or too low, we may first recommend bone grafting to rebuild the site or a sinus lift for the upper back jaw. Uncontrolled gum disease, heavy smoking or certain medical conditions also need attention before planning begins.

How the process works at E&D Dental

  1. Consultation and examination. We review your medical history, medications and goals, and check the gums and remaining teeth.
  2. 3D CBCT scan and records. Our HDX/HBX low-dose CBCT captures the jaw in three dimensions, and impressions or digital records of your bite are taken.
  3. Virtual planning. The implant is positioned on screen around the shape of the final crown. We walk you through the plan so you can see why each choice was made.
  4. Guide fabrication. A custom surgical guide is produced from the approved plan and checked for fit.
  5. Comfortable anesthesia. We use our 3-step painless anesthesia system: topical gel or gargle anesthesia, Endo-Frost cold numbing at the injection point, then a computer-controlled anesthesia device with electric stimulation.
  6. Placement. With the guide seated, the implant is placed through the sleeve. A UV implant surface activator can be used to treat the implant surface just before insertion, and a patient vital-sign monitor follows your condition throughout.
  7. Stability check. AnyCheck stability measurement gives an objective reading that helps us decide when the implant is ready to carry a crown.

Recovery and aftercare

When guided placement is done without opening the gum, many patients notice less swelling and need fewer stitches than with traditional surgery. Mild soreness for a few days is common and is usually managed with prescribed medication and cold compresses.

  • Eat soft, lukewarm food on the opposite side for the first days.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol while the site heals.
  • Keep the area clean with the gentle brushing and rinsing we demonstrate.
  • Attend follow-up visits so we can monitor healing and stability.

The implant then bonds with the bone over a period of weeks to months before the final crown is fitted. Long-term success depends heavily on home care and regular implant check-ups.

Risks and limitations

Guided surgery improves predictability, but it is still surgery. Possible complications include infection, bleeding, temporary numbness, delayed healing and, uncommonly, failure of the implant to integrate. A guide depends on accurate records and a stable fit; if mouth opening is very limited, there may not be room to use one, and the dentist may adjust the approach during surgery for your safety.

Questions patients ask

Frequently asked questions

Are digital guided implants more accurate than freehand placement?

Guided placement follows a plan made on a 3D CBCT scan, so the implant's position, angle and depth are decided before surgery. This generally improves predictability compared with judging position only during the procedure, although the dentist still checks and adjusts as needed.

Does a digital guided implant hurt?

Surgery is done under local anesthesia using our 3-step painless anesthesia system, which is designed to minimize discomfort at the injection and during the procedure. Afterwards, mild soreness for a few days is common and usually manageable with medication.

How long does guided implant surgery take at E&D Dental?

Because planning is completed in advance, placing a single guided implant is often shorter than conventional surgery. Exact chair time depends on the number of implants and whether grafting is needed; we will give you an estimate at your consultation.

Can I get a guided implant if I have little bone?

Possibly. The CBCT scan shows how much bone is available. If it is not enough, bone grafting or a sinus lift may be recommended first, or sometimes at the same visit. Your dentist will explain the options after the scan.
