TMJ Treatment

TMJ treatment addresses pain, clicking, locking or limited opening in the temporomandibular joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. At Seoul E&D Dental Clinic in Sanbon, Gunpo, we combine a careful jaw examination and 3D CBCT imaging with conservative care such as physical therapy, night guards and daily habit changes.

What is a TMJ disorder?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sits just in front of each ear. It lets the jaw hinge open and slide forward so you can talk, chew and yawn. A small cartilage disc cushions the joint, and several chewing muscles move it. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is the umbrella term for problems in the joint, the disc or those muscles.

Common symptoms include:

  • Aching around the ear, temple or cheek, often worse in the morning or after chewing
  • Clicking or popping when opening the mouth
  • A grating sound inside the joint
  • Difficulty opening wide, or the jaw briefly locking
  • Headaches and tired jaw muscles
  • A bite that suddenly feels different

Causes are usually a mix of factors: clenching or teeth grinding, stress, posture, an uneven bite, injury or arthritis. Our article on TMJ symptoms and causes explains these in more detail.

Who benefits from TMJ treatment at a dental clinic?

Most jaw joint problems respond well to conservative, reversible care, and a dentist is often the first professional to recognise them. TMJ treatment at our clinic suits people with muscle-related jaw pain, a clicking joint that has started to hurt, morning jaw fatigue from night-time clenching, or stiffness after long dental work or extractions.

Some situations need a different route. Sudden severe locking that does not release, swelling after a fall or accident, or symptoms linked to rheumatoid arthritis may require hospital imaging or a specialist in oral medicine or rheumatology. If we see signs that point beyond dental care, we will tell you and help arrange a referral.

How we approach TMJ care at E&D Dental

  1. Listening first. We ask when the pain started, what makes it worse, whether you clench during the day or grind at night, and about stress, sleep and posture.
  2. Clinical examination. We measure how far you can open, listen and feel for joint sounds, press gently on the chewing muscles, and check how your teeth meet.
  3. Imaging if needed. Our low-dose 3D CBCT shows the bony parts of the joint, which helps us spot wear, flattening or arthritic change.
  4. A staged plan. Treatment usually begins with the least invasive steps and adds others only if symptoms persist.

Treatment options we may combine

  • TMJ physical therapy. Our in-clinic physical therapy device is designed to support tissue recovery and reduce pain and inflammation in the joint and muscles.
  • Occlusal splint or night guard. A custom night guard spreads biting forces and reduces strain from night-time clenching.
  • Habit coaching. Simple rules such as "lips together, teeth apart", avoiding gum and very chewy foods, and not resting your chin on your hand.
  • Home exercises and heat. Gentle stretching and warm compresses to relax tight muscles.
  • Medication. Short courses of anti-inflammatory or muscle-relaxing medicine where appropriate.
  • Bite adjustment. Considered only after symptoms are under control, and kept minimal, because changing tooth surfaces cannot be undone.

What progress looks like

Muscle-related pain often begins to ease within a few weeks of combining therapy, a splint and habit changes. Joint clicking may remain even when pain is gone; a click that causes no discomfort and never locks usually does not need active treatment. We schedule reviews to adjust the splint and decide whether more therapy sessions are helpful. Keeping a short diary of pain levels and triggers makes these reviews more useful.

Limitations to be aware of

TMJ disorders tend to come and go, especially during stressful periods, so the aim is long-term management rather than a one-time fix. Splints must be worn as advised to help. Conservative care does not reshape a damaged joint, and a small number of patients will need specialist hospital treatment. We will not recommend irreversible bite changes as a first step.

Why Sanbon and Gunpo residents see us for jaw pain

TMJ care is one of our clinic's listed areas of focus. Having a dedicated TMJ physical therapy device, CBCT imaging and splint fabrication under one roof means fewer trips. Many office workers in Gunpo and Anyang find our Monday and Thursday evening hours easier for repeat therapy visits. Our team also looks at whole-body factors such as sleep, stress and chronic illness, in line with our clinic philosophy. If jaw pain is making mealtimes or sleep difficult, book a TMJ assessment or see what to expect on a first visit.

Questions patients ask

Frequently asked questions

Is a clicking jaw a sign of a TMJ disorder?

It can be, but a click without pain or locking is common and often needs no treatment. We recommend an assessment if clicking comes with pain, limited opening or episodes of the jaw getting stuck.

Should I see a dentist or a doctor for TMJ pain?

A dentist is a good first step because the joint, chewing muscles and bite are closely linked. If we find signs of systemic arthritis or a condition beyond dental care, we help arrange a medical referral.

How long does TMJ treatment take?

It varies. Many patients notice improvement within a few weeks of combined therapy, splint use and habit changes, but TMJ symptoms can recur, so periodic reviews are part of long-term care.

Can stress cause TMJ problems?

Stress commonly increases daytime clenching and night-time grinding, which overloads the jaw muscles and joint. Managing stress and these habits is often an important part of treatment.

Will I need surgery for TMJ disorder?

Most people do not. The large majority of TMJ problems are managed with conservative, reversible treatment. Surgery is reserved for specific joint conditions and is carried out in a hospital setting.
