What are complete dentures?
A complete denture, sometimes called a full denture, replaces an entire arch of missing teeth. It consists of artificial teeth set in a gum-coloured base that rests on the ridge of the jaw. An upper denture also covers the palate, which creates suction and helps it stay in place. A lower denture is horseshoe-shaped to leave room for the tongue, so it relies more on muscle control and is usually harder to get used to.
Well-made dentures restore the ability to chew many everyday foods, support the lips and cheeks so the face does not look sunken, and help with clear speech.
Who are full dentures suited for?
- People who have already lost all teeth in one or both jaws
- Patients whose few remaining teeth are too damaged or loose to save
- Those who cannot have implant surgery for medical reasons, or who prefer a non-surgical option
- Patients looking for a more affordable way to restore a full set of teeth
If a lower denture keeps lifting or rubbing, two or more implants can be added to hold it in place. Our page on implant-supported dentures explains that option, and our article on dentures versus implants gives a side-by-side comparison.
Before dentures: preparing the mouth
If some teeth still need removing, we plan the extractions and allow the gums to heal, sometimes fitting a temporary denture so you are not without teeth in the meantime. We also check for sore spots, bony ridges or infections that could affect the fit.
How we make complete dentures at E&D Dental
- Consultation and examination. We review your health, medications and previous denture experience. Our clinic places particular emphasis on safe care for older patients and those with chronic conditions, so we ask about diabetes, blood pressure and dry mouth, which all affect comfort.
- Preliminary impressions. These capture the general shape of your jaws and are used to make a custom tray.
- Final impressions. Using the custom tray, we record the gums and the movement of the cheeks and tongue in detail. Accurate borders are what help a denture stay put.
- Bite registration. We record how your jaws relate to each other, the right height for your face and where the front teeth should sit for a natural smile.
- Try-in. You see and test the teeth set in wax before the denture is finished. Shape, shade and position can still be changed at this stage, and we encourage family members to give their opinion.
- Delivery. The finished denture is fitted and checked for pressure points and an even bite.
- Adjustments. Several short follow-ups over the first weeks are normal while we relieve sore spots.
Adapting to new dentures
New dentures feel big at first. Saliva increases, some words sound different, and chewing takes practice. Most people adapt over a few weeks. Helpful habits include:
- Starting with soft foods cut into small pieces and chewing on both sides at once
- Reading aloud to retrain speech
- Taking dentures out at night so the gums can rest, unless advised otherwise
- Brushing dentures daily with a denture brush and soaking them in a cleanser
- Cleaning your gums, tongue and palate with a soft brush
- Coming back promptly if a sore spot develops rather than adjusting the denture yourself
Limitations of complete dentures
Dentures sit on the gums rather than being anchored in bone, so chewing force is lower than with natural teeth or implants, and very hard or sticky foods remain difficult. The jawbone continues to shrink slowly after tooth loss, which means dentures loosen over time and usually need relining and, eventually, remaking. A lower denture in particular may move during eating. Denture adhesive can help, but a denture that is persistently loose should be checked rather than relying on more adhesive.
Insurance in Korea
Korea's National Health Insurance may cover part of the cost of complete dentures for eligible patients aged 65 and over, subject to conditions and replacement intervals. Our staff can explain eligibility and the documents needed; please see our pricing and insurance information for details.
