What is full-mouth reconstruction?
Full-mouth reconstruction (sometimes called full-mouth rehabilitation) is not a single procedure. It is a comprehensive treatment plan for people whose teeth, gums and bite have several problems at once, such as multiple broken or missing teeth, severe wear from grinding, failing old dental work or long-standing gum disease. Instead of fixing one tooth at a time as problems appear, the dentist looks at the whole mouth, including how the upper and lower jaws meet, and designs a sequence of treatments that work together.
At Seoul E&D Dental Clinic in Sanbon, Gunpo, full-mouth reconstruction is one of the clinic's specialties. Planning is led by Dr. Ryu Si-ho together with our dental team, following the clinic's principle of explaining why each step is needed and which steps can safely wait.
Which treatments can be part of the plan?
Every plan is different, but it may include some of the following:
- Gum disease treatment to stabilize the foundation before any restorations are made
- Root canal treatment to save infected teeth that are still worth keeping
- Dental crowns, onlays or bonded restorations to rebuild worn or broken teeth
- Bridges, full-arch implants or dentures to replace missing teeth
- Bite adjustment and, where relevant, care for the jaw joint
Who is full-mouth reconstruction suited for?
A full-mouth approach is often considered for people who:
- Have many teeth that are cracked, heavily filled or decayed
- Have lost several teeth and find chewing difficult
- Show significant tooth wear from long-term grinding or acid erosion
- Have a collapsed or uneven bite causing jaw discomfort
- Have a mix of old crowns, bridges and fillings that are failing at different times
If only one or two teeth need attention, individual treatment is usually simpler and more appropriate. For patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, or for older adults, the plan is paced carefully. The clinic's experience with general-hospital cases informs how we coordinate dental care with your overall health, and a patient vital-sign monitor can be used during longer procedures.
How the process works at E&D Dental
1. Comprehensive diagnosis
We begin with a full examination, low-dose 3D CBCT imaging to assess bone and roots, X-rays, gum measurements and intraoral camera images. We also ask about your medical history, medications and what matters most to you, whether that is chewing comfort, appearance or limiting the number of visits.
2. Shared treatment planning
We explain the findings and present a phased plan, including alternatives. Urgent problems such as infection or pain are prioritized. You decide on the plan together with the dentist, and the order of steps can be adjusted to your schedule.
3. Foundation phase
Gum treatment, extractions of teeth that cannot be saved, and root canals come first, so that later restorations are placed on a healthy base. The 3-step painless anesthesia system, combining topical anesthetic, Endo-Frost cold numbing and computer-controlled delivery, is designed to keep these visits as comfortable as possible.
4. Rebuilding and replacing
Implants, crowns, bridges or dentures are placed in stages. Temporary restorations may be worn while the bite is tested and refined.
5. Final restorations and maintenance
Once function and appearance are confirmed, the final restorations are placed and a maintenance schedule is agreed.
Recovery and aftercare
Recovery happens gradually over the course of treatment rather than all at once. After surgical steps, some swelling or tenderness is normal for a few days; the clinic's physical therapy device for tissue recovery may be used after extractions or implant placement. Adapting to a new bite can take a few weeks, and fine adjustments are part of the process.
Long-term success depends heavily on maintenance: regular check-ups and professional cleaning, thorough home care around crowns and implants, and a night guard if you grind your teeth.
Risks and limitations
Full-mouth reconstruction is a significant commitment of time, appointments and cost. Individual components carry their own risks, such as implant complications, root canal failure or crown fractures. A new bite may need adjustment, and some patients experience temporary jaw or muscle tiredness. Restorations do not last forever and will need monitoring and eventual replacement. We discuss these points openly before treatment begins.
