What is a single tooth implant?
A single implant has three parts. The implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone, where it acts as a new root. The abutment connects the post to the visible tooth. The crown is the tooth-shaped cap that you see and chew with.
Because the implant stands on its own, the teeth next to the gap are left untouched. That is the main difference from a traditional dental bridge, which normally requires the neighbouring teeth to be trimmed to support a false tooth between them.
Why replace just one tooth?
One missing tooth can seem minor, especially at the back of the mouth. Over time, though, nearby teeth may tilt into the space, the opposite tooth can drift, food can trap more easily, and the bone where the root used to be gradually shrinks. Replacing the tooth helps keep the bite balanced.
Who is suited to a single implant?
- Adults with one missing tooth, or a tooth that cannot be saved.
- People whose neighbouring teeth are healthy and would be unnecessarily cut down for a bridge.
- Patients with reasonably healthy gums and enough jawbone, or who are willing to have bone rebuilt first.
Before recommending removal, we always ask whether the existing tooth can be kept. A well-done root canal treatment and crown may preserve a tooth for many years. Teenagers whose jaws are still growing generally wait, and patients with uncontrolled diabetes or other health issues may need their condition stabilised first.
The single implant process at our Sanbon clinic
- Initial visit. We discuss your health history and examine the gap and surrounding teeth. A Q-ray intraoral camera can reveal plaque, cavities or cracks on neighbouring teeth that should be addressed too.
- CBCT imaging. A low-dose 3D scan measures the bone and locates nearby structures.
- Clear explanation. We explain why an implant is recommended, what the alternatives are, and whether it needs to happen now or can be scheduled later.
- Placement. With our 3-step painless anesthesia system (topical numbing, Endo-Frost cold numbing, then computer-controlled anesthesia), the implant is placed. Where suitable, a no-incision technique or guided surgery is used.
- Healing period. The bone bonds to the implant surface. Our UV implant surface activator is used to prepare the implant surface before placement.
- Stability check and crown. AnyCheck confirms readiness, then the abutment and crown are made, fitted and adjusted to your bite.
If the tooth is still present and needs removal, ask whether it could be replaced with a same-day extraction and implant.
Recovery and everyday care
After placement, expect mild discomfort and perhaps some swelling for a few days. Eat soft food, avoid the area when chewing and keep it clean as instructed. Once the crown is fitted, you brush and floss around it like a natural tooth, adding an interdental brush for the gum line.
An implant cannot decay, but the gum and bone around it can become inflamed if plaque builds up. Regular professional scaling and implant check-ups help keep the surrounding tissue healthy.
How long will a single implant last?
There is no fixed lifespan. Implants that are placed in healthy bone, restored with a well-fitted crown and looked after with good home care and regular visits can serve for many years. The crown on top is more likely to need attention at some point than the implant itself, for example if the porcelain chips or the connecting screw loosens. Habits such as night-time grinding, smoking or skipping cleanings shorten the life of both.
What are the risks?
Single implants are a well-established treatment, but complications can occur. These include infection, injury to adjacent structures, temporary numbness, implant failure and, later on, inflammation around the implant known as peri-implantitis. Crowns may loosen or chip over time. Smoking and poor oral hygiene noticeably raise these risks.
